“John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel.” Luke 1:80
When Americans read the word ‘wilderness’, we usually think of open, untamed areas found in places like Colorado or Montana—or maybe our unmowed backyard! But the Judean wilderness is a wasteland that resembles more of a desert: little if any trees, grass, vegetation, or water.
Lots of important Bible events happened in the wilderness/desert: Moses and the Hebrews wandering around in the Sinai, David’s locale when he wrote some psalms as he hid from Saul, and Jesus’ 40-day fast, along with His encounter with Satan.
And then there is John’s development as a prophet and forerunner of Jesus. He lived in the wilderness/desert, seeking Yahweh, praying, studying the Scriptures, and relatively isolated from the benefits others of his time enjoyed.
Wilderness/desert is the place of testing and preparation. Maybe you’re in that place now. Life is difficult, barren even. Joy seems distant. There is nothing flourishing in your soul.
But get this: seeking God in the deserts of life, pouring more into His word, and cooperating with His Spirit—does something in us that can’t be accomplished any other way. We become stronger, more resolute, and discover the ability to flourish in the most difficult of times.
This Christmas, look back on your desert experiences and thank God for them and what He did in you as a result. If you’re in one now, know that He will use it to bring flourishing to your soul.
Jesus, thank You for enduring the desert experiences of Your life for my sake. Enable me to grow strong in mine. Amen
