“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.” Psalm 95:1
Dwayne Johnson is known as The Rock because he has built and honed his body and muscles to look like a rock. If people named me for my physical appearance, I might be called The Roll.
Many times in the Psalms, God is identified as the real Rock (please don’t tell Dwayne I said he’s not the real Rock), and we see it in this psalm.
Where is the focus right now in your life? It’s easy for us to get focused on ourselves, particularly in trial, trouble, or tragedy. We need reminding that our life, and what’s happening in it, is ultimately not about us—it’s about Him. If our circumstances remain all about us, then there can be no higher purpose for our suffering. Maybe you’ve heard the saying: “A life wrapped up in itself is a very small package.”
The psalmist points us in the right direction; He challenges us to stop looking inside and around and begin looking up. He exhorts us to break into songs of worship and thanksgiving with hearts of joy. He gives a number of reasons. First: God is the source and security of our salvation. “Rock of our salvation” refers to the incident in Exodus 17 when the Hebrews were wandering in the Sinai and out of water. God told Moses to strike a rock and out of it would flow life-giving water. Moses responded in faith and obedience and that’s exactly what happened. When you think about it, a rock in the desert would be the last place you would think about finding water, right? But that’s the way God works at times: He takes the least likely circumstance (finding water in a desert rock) or the least likely person (Moses) to do the least likely thing (strike a rock with a stick) to show His great and glorious power.
He is the Rock; the personal provider and protector of our salvation. The word for salvation is yesha. The name of God used here is Yahweh, His personal, relational name. Combine these together and you get Yeshua, Yahweh saves, aka JESUS! He is the Living Water!
God, You are my Rock and my Redeemer. Bless Your holy name. Amen
